Information
Placement of implants in the posterior mandible is limited by the height of bone between the alveolar crest and the inferior alveolar canal. Inferior alveolar nerve transposition technique offers better initial stability by securing longer fixtures in the basal mandibular cortex and reduces the risk of permanent damage to the nerve.
We placed two Branemark implants in an atrophied mandibular posterior edentulous alveolar ridge that was lacking sufficient vertical height superior to the mandibular canal with this technique. Neurosensory dysfunction was found in the operated site after surgery, but nerve function returned normal after 5 months.
