Abstract
Titanium has been widely used as a dental implant material due to good biocompatibility and high resistance to corrosion. When hydroxyapatite (HA) coating to titanium surface is used, initial healing response could be better. But, the successful application of HA coatings to titanium surface is very difficult because the thermal expansion coefficient of titanium amounts to only 60% of that of HA. As a result, it has been reported that coating problems, including cracking, flaking, scratching or chipping were found and subsequent corrosion was developed. Recently, a new titanium alloy, Ti-Mn6, was developed to overcome the thermal expansion problem. It has good physical properties and when coated with HA, there exists a extremely thin, strong and crack-free HA coating layer. But, there was little study on its biological behavior. This study was designed to evaluate the biocompatibility of titanium and Ti-Mn6. The viability of mouse fibroblast (L 92 7mnsity of 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1㎎ of these particulate materials were evaluated by neutral red assay method for 3~48 hours, and the cellular attachment behaviors on titanium and Ti-Mn6 surface were observed with time period(1~12 hours) using scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows; 1. There were insignificant change of cellular viabilities in each material with the density and time, and no significant difference between both groups(P>0.05). 2. In SEM finding the cells on titanium and Ti-Mn6 surface were attached and spreaded more rapidly with time, extending cellular processes and communicating with adjacent cells. In 1 hour there was no different finding between both groups, After 3 hours, however, Ti-Mn6 showed better finding in attachment. These findings suggest that Ti-Mn6 have good biocompatibility comparable to titanium, and can be used properly as a implant material, especially in case of HA coating to implant surface.
