Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of osseointegration of natural bone regeneration between HA-coated implant and bone at the bony defect area surrounding HA-coated implant surface. Twelve rabbits were divided into 3 Groups. Then, they were implanted as follows: Control Group was implanted with 3.25mm diameter, 8.0mm long HA-coated implant. Experimental Group I was implanted with 3.25mm diameter, 8.0mm long HA-coated implant after formation of 4.0mm diameter, 3.0mm long bony defect at the upper part of implant socket. Experimental Group Ⅱ implanted with 3.25mm diameter, 8.0mm long HA-coated implant after formation of 4.5mm diameter, 3.0mm long bony defect at the upper part of implant socket. Therefore, the gaps between implant and bony defect were each of 0.375mm and 0.625mm in group Ⅰ and Ⅱ respectively. The fluorochrome labeling was performed periodically. At 6 weeks after implantation, all animals were sacrificed. The interface between implant and surrounding bone was examined by light microscope and fluorescent microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In all the groups, the bony regeneration between HA-coated implant and surrounding bone was more progressed in the cortical bone area than in the cancellous bone. 2. In both control group and group I, it was found that HA-coated implant was in close contact with the surrounding bone. 3. In group I, it was observed, using fluorescent micrograph, that osseointegration occurred at the bony defected area surrounding HA-coated implant by natural bony regeneration. 4. In group Ⅱ, unlike group I, it was observed that the defect area was partially filled with osteoid and fibrous tissue. 5. Within the gap of 0.375mm, rigid osseointegration was achieved between the HA-coated implant and surrounding bone.
