Introduction of implant dentistry brought out a new era in clinical dental practice. During the past 40 years, prosthetic rehabilitation of the edentulous patient with implant-supported prosthesis has been developed into a viable and predictable treatment option. However, successful dental implant treatment has been associated with rigid protocols advocating engthy periods of undisturbed healing. During the past two decades this traditional protocol has been questioned and numerous clinical studies have reported on the outcome of immediate loading of implants in various clinical situations. The concept of immediate implant loading has become popular due to reduced overall treatment time, decreased patient’s anxiety and discomfort, high patient ompliance and better function and esthetics. However, research and understanding in immediate implant loading are still controversial. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to provide rationales for immediate implant loading, and summarize current avail able literatures. Results from this review indicated that immediate implant loading achieved a similar high success rate as conventional delayed implant loading. However, a careful case selection, a proper treatment plan, suitable implant systems, and precise surgical techniques are essential for optimal outcomes when immediate implant loading is applied.
