It has been very challenging for clinician to place dental implants on posterior maxilla region due to limited bone quantity and poor bone quality. In an effort to place dental implants with proper length, maxillary sinus augmentation was considered and has been performed. Various bone graft materials have been used in sinus augmentation procedures. One of the commonly used material is biphasic calcium phosphate which is the mixture of HA and β-TCP. It has been considered as a good scaffold for the new bone. Its biocompatibility and osteoinductive property for bone remodeling has been proved to be proper for sinus augmentation procedure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the new bone formation in maxillary sinus by applying biphasic calcium phosphate as a sinus graft material throughout different healing period after surgery. 3 patients were selected after dental examination and biphasic calcium phosphate was used as a bone substitute for maxillary sinus augmentation. After healing period(7, 8.5, 10 months), core biopsies were taken using trephine bur for histologic evaluation. Bone specimens were prepared and inspected using microscope. All patients were healed uneventfully. Histologic evaluation revealed that biphasic calcium phosphate particles were surrounded by newly-formed bone. Between particles and newly-formed bone, osteoid tissues were infiltrated. It was found that the newly-formed bone contained osteocytes. Resorption of alloplastic material was found between new bone and biphasic calcium phosphate on their interface. Within the limit of this study, it can be concluded that biphasic calcium phosphate when used as a grafting material for sinus floor augmentation may lead to the predictable results, and that it may be considered appropriate graft material for sinus augmentation from the findings in this study.
