Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate and compare the guided bone regeneration, using various barrier membranes in bony defects around the installation site of the implant.
Materials and Methods: Ninety four patients (159 implants) who visited the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, from March 2005 to December 2009, wer included. All patients had bone defects when implants were installed and guided bone regeneration was done, simultaneously. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the kinds of membranes (Group 1: Cytoplast® [Oraltronics, Bremen, Germany], TR Goretex® [W.L.Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ, USA], Group 2: Bioarm® [ACE Surgical Supply Company Inc., Brockton, MA, USA], Group 3: Ossix® [OraPharma Inc., Horsham, PA, USA]). Bone defects were measured at the time of the first surgery and were compared with defects at the second surgery clinically.
Results: Almost all defects were regained after guided bone regeneration. There was no significant difference between the groups but Ossix® showed more egeneration pattern than that of the other membranes. Complications occurred in 28 cases. Wound dehiscence was 25 times.
Conclusion: Barrier membranes help bone regeneration, regardless of the types. Through guided bone regeneration, we can regenerate bone defects at the implant installation site.
