Abstract
Patients with extensive alveolar ridge resorption of pain and discomfort caused by denture wearing and of their inability to control the denture because of the lack of stable bony bases. There are several treatment options for these patients including ridge augmentation, bone grafts, nerve repositioning with endosteal implants, staple implants, ramus implants and subperiosteal implants. The ideal treatment plan should be made according to anatomic condition, health, prosthetic need, patient’s desires and financial conditions. The subperiosteal implant is designed to rest on top of the bone, under the periosteum. Rather than gaining endosteal support as teeth or most alloplastic implants used in the body, this implant distributes stresses from the posthesis to large areas of bone surface. We show some cases in which subperiosteal implants were clinically applicated and suggest possible indications for subperiosteal implants. It appears that the subperiosteal implant can provide a reliable prognosis for patients who are suffering from the problems of chronic denture wearing due to severely atrophied alveolar ridge if it is used to the right indication by experienced profession.
