Information
The purpose of this study was to measure the cortical bone thickness of mandibular retromolar area and to provide information about mandibular retromolar bone grafting for dental implant procedure.
Cortical bone thickness was measured at 15 points using three dimensional reformation program from 90 patients who were undergone computerized tomography scans for dental implant treatment. Analysis about correlation between cortical bone thickness and age, gender, right-left, position (mesio-distally, sueprio-inferiorly) was performed.
The results were as follows.
1. Mean cortical thickness of male was significantly thicker than that of female (p<0.05).
2. No statistically significant difference between right and left mean cortical thickness was found (p>0.05).
3. Mesio-distally, mean cortical thickness of positions at 4mm and 8mm distal from 2nd molar distal root were significantly thicker than that of positions at 2nd molar mesial root, distal root, 12mm distal from 2nd molar distal root (p<0.05).
4. Superio-inferiorly, a negative correlation between distance from alveolar crest (4 mm, 8 mm, 12 mm) and mean cortical thickness (p<0.05) was found.
5. In male, a positive correlation between age and mean cortical thickness was found (p<0.05).
6. In female, mean cortical thickness of the old group was significantly thinner than that of the youth and adult, the middle age group(p<0.05).
Proceeding from the above result, cortical bone up to 4mm in thickness may be harvested from mandibular retromolar area in koreans. And we would like to propose that the mandibular retromolar area can be a suitable donor site for the grafting surgery for dental implant.
